One of those desks

Every gallon of gasoline at the pump has been bought and sold several times before it gets there, by traders most people never hear about. Front Office: Gasoline puts you at one of those desks.

You join a fictional trading firm as its newest gasoline trader. You have a book, a loss limit, a boss who checks your numbers every evening, and a market that doesn't care about any of it.

What you do

Trade

  • Buy and sell gasoline and crude futures as prices move through the day.
  • Play through a day at your own pace: pause, or speed the clock up when it's quiet.

Read the market

  • Refinery outages, storms and the summer driving season all move prices.
  • Not always the way the headline suggests.

Keep your job

  • Watch your profit and loss, your position and your limit.
  • Lose too much and the desk will find someone else.
  • Lessons start from your first trade and build up from there.

Why gasoline?

Trading games tend to be about stocks or crypto: a chart, a buy button and a number that goes up or down. Commodities work differently. The thing you're trading has to be stored, moved and delivered to someone who needs it on a particular day, and that changes how the whole job feels.

There's a lot more on the desk than this. We're keeping most of it for launch.

Who's making it

Front Office: Gasoline was designed by someone on our team who spent more than four years in a front-office role on a trading desk, and it draws on many conversations with brokers and traders since. All companies and people in the game are fictional, prices are simulated, and nothing in it is financial advice.

A series

Gasoline is the first desk, and crude oil is next. If you've worked in another commodity market, such as petrochemicals, agriculture, metals or rates, we'd love to hear how the job actually runs day to day (nothing confidential to your employer, please): [email protected].

Play it early

Front Office is still very early in development, and a playtest is some way off. Leave your email and we'll send an invite when there's something to play.
